Today marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a moment to recognise the achievements, leadership, and impact of women working across scientific disciplines worldwide. At Trace2o and Wagtech Projects, it is also an opportunity to celebrate the talented and dedicated women who contribute daily to advancing safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions for communities around the globe.

Across our teams and networks, we are fortunate to work alongside inspiring women — from engineers and scientists to partners, distributors, and sector leaders within the WASH and humanitarian fields. Their expertise, collaboration, and commitment help ensure that science is not only innovative but also practical and accessible where it is needed most. Together, they are shaping a future where safe water and resilient communities are within reach for all.

One of those voices is Betelhem Belachew, a Chemical Engineer and Technical Sales Representative, who shared her reflections on what this day represents:

“As someone lucky enough to build a career with Wagtech Projects & Trace2o — using science to solve real community problems — this day means a lot to me.

"For me, science isn’t just about research and data — it’s about tackling real challenges and showing the next generation of girls that science can be a tool to solve them too. I’m proud to be a woman in science, and even prouder to be part of a company that makes science practical, impactful, and accessible on a global scale.” Betelhem’s perspective highlights the powerful role science plays beyond the laboratory.

In the WASH sector especially, scientific knowledge becomes a direct tool for change, and improving water quality monitoring, strengthening emergency response, and supporting communities to build healthier, more sustainable futures. When women are empowered within these fields, the impact is amplified: new ideas emerge, diverse perspectives shape solutions, and more young girls are encouraged to see themselves as future scientists and innovators.

At Trace2o and Wagtech Projects, we remain committed to fostering inclusive environments where women in STEM can thrive, lead, and inspire. We believe that representation matters, not only within our own organisation but across the global sector. By supporting and celebrating women in science, we help create pathways for the next generation to explore, question, and contribute to solving the world’s most pressing challenges.

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we extend our gratitude to the women across our teams and partnerships who continue to drive progress through.
